A Little Monday Pick Me Up...

Hi everyone,

So it's a dreary old Autumn Monday. It's a little bit chilly, drizzly and just a bit grim and I think that sometimes, we all need a little bit of a pick me up.  I've always absolutely loved Louise of Sprinkle of Glitter and her 'Motivational Mondays' posts and after a weekend of work and a mountain of reading to do for uni sitting on my bureau, I think this little version of my own is very much needed to give me and whoever else needs it, a little boost for the start of the week...

A few weeks ago while I was sat in my car in the carpark of the same Bristol services that i've sat in hundreds of times on hundreds of different travels, halfway through a 5 hour drive home from Staffordshire, feeling a bit sorry for myself, I did my usual browse of Instagram in a last ditch attempt to find a funny cat picture to get me through the remainder of the journey (you all know you do it too!). Anyway, while browsing, I stumbled across one of the best accounts i've ever seen. It's called Humans of New York (or HONY) and it's effectively a collection of 'street style' type pictures taken by a single photographer as he goes about his life living and working in New York. He stops random people on the street, asks to take their picture and collects little snippets of their thoughts from short stories from their lives to quotes to wise words of advice.

These people are total strangers. Ordinary inhabitants of a single city, but they're the same kinds of people that we all walk past in our own cities every day. They aren't all aesthetically interesting or dazzlingly beautiful or quirky - some are of course - they're mostly just ordinary people, going about their business each with a story of their own to tell.  I love that this photographer captures these little moments in time and captures mere seconds of peoples lives, he see's something interesting in the least seemingly interesting looking people.

You'd be excused for rolling your eyes at this point muttering 'Soph's this is all a little too deep and meaningful for a Monday morning, I only came on here for a nail polish review...' and you wouldn't be wrong there my friend. What i'm getting at is that sometimes I think that we all try a little too hard to be 'individual' or 'unique' or 'quirky'. So hard in fact that at some point or another all this individuality merges into one and everyone just looks the same...you only have to take a stroll down your average British high street to see groups of people dressed almost identically. Don't get me wrong, i'm as guilty of this as the next person. At times I feel like a walking blogger cliche. The thing is, i'm actually pretty sensible. I could even be classed as a bit safe and boring with what I wear. I judge myself by other peoples standards, far too often. Since starting this little blog i've been consumed by the feeling that I will never be as effortlessly cool or as stylish without trying as most of the bloggers that I follow and have followed for years. But you know what? Thats fine.

I just think we all need to stop thinking we aren't interesting or unique or individual. Yes, we might not be able to rock a pair of orange disco pants or do the weekly shop wearing a pair of Jeffrey Campbell Litas without looking like a bit of a moron, but believe it or not theres people out there that will still think you're pretty awesome anyway. It's not a crime to prefer your slippers over your Sleek palette or your angora over your Alexa bag. It's not even a crime to think that your (brace yourselves) Ugg boots are without a doubt the comfiest things you've ever put on your feet and those heels you love but kill your feet, given the option, would stay in their box at the back of the wardrobe in favour of those sheepskin lined 'walking on a cloud' beauties. Chances are, all those girls whose wardrobes and make up collections we lust after post by post would probably say the same... if a little quietly...

In the grand scheme of things, it really isn't a big deal if the lives we portray on these little blogs of ours are less Devil Wears Prada and a bit more Great British Bake Off. Trust me, I think if we were all honest with ourselves, we'd rather choose the cake...

Have a lovely week!
